Cissy - Lynn, before we get started on questions, will you tell us about your novella in TO WEAVE A WEB OF MAGIC?
Lynn Kurland - Cissy, thanks. I'd been dying to write fantasy (I know people have differing opinions on the matter, but I like it) so when Berkley offered me the chance, I jumped. It's just sort of a peek into another world I'm creating. I tell people it's just me with a few faeries, elves, and etc. thrown in.
MichelletheMerry - Can you give us any tidbits on your next novel? Is it going to be about Amanda of Artane?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle . . . might be. Or I might have changed my mind. Don't you want to be surprised?
NancyinTexas - Is the cover up anywhere yet?
Lynn Kurland - Nancy - No cover for new book, but my beloved ed[itor] did tell me about it and it's going to be fabulous.
MichelletheMerry - What do you find the hardest part of writing a novella, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle - keeping it short! I'm much more comfortable with 500 pages rather than 50. Witness my short, pithy answers here. What can I say? I'm a blabbermouth.
MichelletheMerry - Ok, another question: do you have a favorite character?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle, fav char? It's a tossup between Patrick, Alex and Robin. I love the grumpy guys, but I thought Alex was pretty tempting as well.
susiemetzj - And in turn . . . is there a character you LEAST like?
Lynn Kurland - Susie - Least favorite? Bentley. What a jerk.
Ol - Tell me about your hero.
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Which one? In the anthology? He's sort of a tortured sort. I liked him a lot, though, because he just soldiered on, doing what he needed to when the chips are down.
Ol - What book are you working on next, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - it's a de Piaget book. I have a hard and fast rule to never talk about what I'm working on, but my board members are beginning to wear me down! Just kidding, I still never talk about what I'm working on. If I tell the story, there's no point in writing it in my mind.
G - How do you get your ideas for the books?
Lynn Kurland - G - I start first with a character, think about where they are in their lives and then sort of work out the plot from there. I try to write visually, like it was a movie playing in my head. Things just sort of suggest themselves as I go along.
MichelletheMerry - All of them are wonderful, but is there one in particular that really brought you to tears when you were writing it?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle - This is All I Ask, definitely. I still get misty over that one.
Ol - Is it another time travel book, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Can't say. Might be. Might not be. It's a surprise, really!
Ol - What comes first for you, Character or Plot?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Character, definitely. Once I know who the people are, the plot just sort of shows up.
mistral - Oh I got a question . . . TMISY . . . What colour is Jessica's hair supposed to be? We where having a debate on the board about that. lol
Lynn Kurland - Mistral - Um, good question! I always thought of it as sort of a brown kind of color . . .
NancyinTexas - Do your characters write themselves, or do you know before you put finger to keypad what they'll be like?
Lynn Kurland - Nancy - A little of both - how's that for a good answer?
Evelina_1 - Wait a minute, I remember you mentioned that you had signed a deal to write three book off of the Two Swords, when will they be out?
Lynn Kurland - Evelina - I'm not sure. I'm just going to send them and let Berkley figure it out. Maybe the first one next fall? . . . Don't quote me on that! I have no control over when things come out, but I know Berkley would like to do something soon . . .
Ol - What book is on your keeper shelf, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Lots of fantasy, mystery and non-fiction regarding all things medieval, English and Scottish
Ol - Did you enjoy doing an Anthology and would you do it again?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Novellas are hard for me to write. Too short, but I'd do it again if the right opportunity came up.
susiemetzj - Are the others from Two Swords going to be novellas also?
Lynn Kurland - Susie, I don't understand - do you mean am I going to write other books about those characters? Same world, potentially same characters.
BacTGirl - Hope I'm not repeating a previous question: Lynn, How did you choose your genre?
Lynn Kurland - BacTGirl - I love romance, ghost stories, and time travels. I suppose the genre just chose me.
MichelletheMerry - I think it's safe to say you get a lot of emails. What has been the weirdest request, or suggestion you've received?
Lynn Kurland - MichelleTheMerry - I don't know. I usually get nice ones or ones telling me I stink - there's not much in between.
NancyinTexas - Lynn, did you get to meet Claire Delacroix or any of the other authors?
Lynn Kurland - Nancy - I've talked to Claire, she's great. I've never met Patricia or Sharon, but I'm a big fan of theirs.
Ol - Why is it that you like longer stories?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Big books? I have more room to get into the book and the characters.
G - Do any of the characters remind you of someone you know?
Lynn Kurland - G - Alex; at dinner, he's my husband grunting and pointing for sustenance.
Ol - If you could travel back in time where would you go and who would you like to meet?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Eleanor of Aquitaine - what a woman.
Ol - If you could travel back in time where would you go and who would you like to be?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Middle Ages, what an interesting time.
MichelletheMerry - How long does it take you to write a novel?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle - It takes start to finish about six months. I wish I had more time for each book - it's a tradeoff: seeing my stuff in safeway vs. having the luxury of making things perfect. It makes me crazy sometimes, but you do what you have to.
Ailsa - I still want to know how do you write with the kids?? Do you have to wait until they are asleep???
Lynn Kurland - Ailsa, I'm now typing with said unhappy 2-yr-old on my lap. I write some after they're asleep, some while baby naps and a lot in a notebook while playing Barbies and groovy girls.
Ol - Who would you like to do an anthology with if you could do it again?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - Too many great authors - I couldn't choose.
MichelletheMerry - How old were you when you first thought of writing?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle - That would be telling, wouldn't it? I started when I was five with a series of books entitled Clinton's Troubles (a boy in my kindergarten, not the ex-pres) who seemed to run afoul of many terrible things. My mother says he bugged me. I think I've been pinioning ex-boyfriends in print ever since.
Ol - What would you like to try to write that you haven't before, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - I think I'm going to stick with romance and fantasy for the moment. I'm always surprised by mysteries so I don't think I could wrap my mind around that. I've thought about some kind of chick lit kind of thing, but don't have time now to explore it.
NancyinTexas - Have you ever thought of writing about a really minor character . . . say Andrew from A Dance Through Time . . .?
Lynn Kurland - Nancy - I'm sure the well will begin to run dry someday and I'll go back and look for other people to bring to light.
MichelletheMerry - Hardest book to finish, that you wrote Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - Michelle - Hardest book to finish - every one! My editor invariably calls me after I've sent her something to tell me the ending is too fast.
NancyinTexas - How do you slow your endings after they're finished?
Lynn Kurland - Nancy, I just go back and rewrite, rewrite, rewrite . . .
BacTGirl - Did you study writing in college, take a seminar or just wing it for you first book, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland - BacTGirl, I took basic English stuff in college, but I just basically sat down and wrote what was in my head. I think pretty much anyone who has a basic grasp of grammar and etc. can sit down and put thoughts on paper. It's just a matter of practice and having something to say.
Ol - Why don't you like going to Conferences?
Lynn Kurland - Ol - I don't not like conferences. I like the socializing part of it but my kids are young and it's hard for me (and them) for me to leave. I think at this point in my life my time is better spent writing than speaking.
BacTGirl - How much did you have to change about your first novel before it was accepted?
Lynn Kurland - BacTGirl - Honey, that thing was so polished, it was good to go! I did have a very interesting copy editor, though (not my beloved editor) who changed almost every word. When she didn't know what Black Watch plaid was, I stopped taking her seriously and life was good.
Evelina_1 - Please, oh please, Lynn, can you give us a small hint of Dreams of Stardust?
Lynn Kurland - Evelina, oh, I wish I could! You don't want me to ruin the magic, do you? (guilt, guilt, guilt)
