Questions and Answers from the Writerspace live chat with LynnK on 12.13.06:
BadBarb — Welcome to our chat with Lynn Kurland. Tonight Lynn will be chatting about her newest release STAR OF THE MORNING. If you have a question for Lynn please type in a ? and I will call on you.
BadBarb — Lynn will you please tell us about STAR OF THE MORNING?
Lynn Kurland — Barb, thanks for asking. :) Star of the Morning is the first in a trilogy set in a fantasy world that I started writing about in a couple of previous anthologies. Synopses are not my strong suit, so I'll just say that it's a love story that's going to stretch luxuriously over three books, there's a little magic, some peril and lots of swordfights. The usual thing for me. :)
BadBarb — Can you tell us a little bit about your hero and heroine?
Lynn Kurland — Here's from the back cover: Morgan is a practical woman with no use for magic, yet she feels compelled to offer her sword to the sorcerer king of Neroche. Her fateful decision will lead her to a magic destiny . . . and a man whose love will change her life forever.
Lynn Kurland — Hero: Miach, the archmage of Neroche, is the king's younger brother--and duty bound to aid his king. (He's searching for something---only to find out Morgan's what he's looking for.) Though he finds what he seeks, he will lose his heart in a way he never could have forseen. In this land of dragons and mages, warrior maids and magical swords, nothing is as it seems . . .
Ol — Are you going to do more time travels, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland — Ol, always. I love time travels.
amyfendley — What kind of writing schedule do you have, do you have another job?
Lynn Kurland — Amy--I have young kids, so I'm home with them. I work mostly at night when the kids are asleep. I have very dark circles under my eyes. :) Make-up covers a multitude of sins. :)
Ol — What is the other magic book that you wrote that is not a time travel?
Lynn Kurland — Ol--lots of my books aren't time travels . . but the other two magical books are short stories in To Weave a Web of Magic and Queen in Winter.
readingaddict — Lynn, are there genres that you haven't written before that you would like to try?
Lynn Kurland — I think I'd like to try a YA at some point. I love mysteries, but I'm always surprised at the end of them so they probably aren't really my thing. I'm very happy to be testing the fantasy waters.
readingaddict — What are you working on for the future and have planned?
Lynn Kurland — RA--I have another romance planned for May 2007, then after that I have the next two books of this fantasy triology . . . and always more romances.
amyfendley — What got you started on time travel?
Lynn Kurland — Amy . . . Probably Somewhere in Time. What a great movie. I really loved how time wrapped around on itself there. And I like history, so time travel gives me a chance to have a fresh look at it.
Ol — Did you finish all the time travel families or are there more?
Lynn Kurland — Ol . . . Always more time travels in the future.
Ol — Tell us about the sexy hero in this book?
Lynn Kurland — Ol, he's just your basic wizard, but he's pretending to be something he's not because the heroine detests mages.
readingaddict — Lynn, when was your first book published and how long did it take to get published?
Lynn Kurland — RA . . . My first book was bought in 1994, published in 1996. I had submitted earlier than that, but the book (Stardust of Yesterday) had a ghost for the hero and it took some time for Berkley to find the right place to put it in their line. They took a big chance on it--especially since the conventional wisdom at the time was that only secondary characters could be ghosts.
jocelin — Man, I'm glad they took that chance!
Lynn Kurland — Jocelin--me too. BTW, When I Fall in Love is Nicholas's book. Tidbit just for you. :) Well, you and Michelle--I owe her for announcing this for me!
Ol — When is that book out?
Lynn Kurland — May--which means the end of April 2007.
BadBarb — Can you give us a sneak peak at WHEN I FALL IN LOVE?
Lynn Kurland — Barb, I . . . . . . . . . . can't. Too much information is a bad thing. All I can say is it's Nicholas's story and it was about time. I really had a great time hanging out with those characters.
Lynn Kurland — Barb . . . That didn't come across as tongue in cheek as I intended it. I just like to dole out information as slowly as possible :)
Ol — No hint about the heorine, new or somebody we met before?
Lynn Kurland — Ol . . . Nope. Not even a little hint :) It would ruin the surprise for you.
amyfendley — What advice would you give a starting author?
Lynn Kurland — Amy--my best advice would be to write what you love to read. And read a lot, in a lot of different genres. I think reading really great books helps you internalize good writing. Then I think you have to just practice a lot . . . and write what you love. It shows when you do. :)
readingaddict — Lynn, what started you writing romance novels?
Lynn Kurland — RA--I read a few too many that didn't end the way I liked. I thought it would be fun to try my own, just for my own consumption of course, and write what I wanted to read. I really never thought I'd be doing this for a living--but it's seriously the most wonderful job--and I can hardly call it a job. I get paid to daydream on paper. :) What's not to like about that?
brittany — What authors do you read, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland — Brittany--the unfortunate thing is that I spend so much time writing that I dont have a lot of time to read. When I do read, I like mysteries (I love Dick Francis, Anne George, and the lady who wrote the books about the flamingoes, and Dorthy Cannell, and I love Robin McKinley, Patricia McKillip and Sharon Shinn). I read a lot of non-fiction about obscure facets of medieval life. Very inspring. :)
brittany — No Stephen King???
Lynn Kurland — Brittany--I read Salem's Lot --- that was enough :)
Ol — How many book in this magaic series, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland — Ol--Not sure yet. Star of the Morning is the first in a trilogy. After that, we'll see.
Ol — Ok is the next book about a character in this one?
Lynn Kurland — Ol--the trilogy (Star of the Morning and the subsequent two) are about the same main characters: Morgan & Miach.
BadBarb — Lynn, is there a type of paranormal that you would like to write but haven't?
Lynn Kurland — Barb--I actually did write a vampire book--it was one of the first things I submitted. But I decided I didn't want to continue in that . . . vein. (Sorry.) It's just too dark for me. I'd rather laugh than get spooked.
Ol — If this book became a movie who would you want to play the hero, Lynn?
Lynn Kurland — Ol . . . too hard to say. :)
Ol — Do tell us who you like to read?
Lynn Kurland — Ol--mystery, fantasy, books on medieval dining habits. That kind of thing.
readingaddict — Are your series stand-alones or do you have to read them in order?
Lynn Kurland — RA . . . I'm probably not the best one to ask that of. I try to make them enjoyable no matter the order you read them in. What generally happens is someone will jump in on the current book, then go back to read the others. I try to make it so there are things you might not notice on the first read, but you'd pick up the next time.
Ol — Does your family read your books?
Lynn Kurland — OL . . . yes.
brittany — Lynn, any contests on your site?
Lynn Kurland — Brittany--not at the moment. I'm really disorganized so it's hard to keep up with them. When I get it together, yes. :)
Lynn Kurland — I probably should head out too. Little Bear's winding down. It's been great! Happy reading everyone.
Ol — Who is your fave hero of the time travel books?
Lynn Kurland — Ol --- Patrick MacLeod. Without question. Night everyone!
jocelin — Thanks for coming and for the tidbit, Lynn!
Lynn Kurland — Jocelin--my pleasure. Thanks for coming. :) Thanks to you all for a great chat!
